Confused about guitar techniques at beginner level, anyone who knows how to play the guitar, easy points?

In my beginner guitar book, it tells me to strum certain chords 'towards the ceiling.' I keep trying to strum upwards, but I keep hitting the wrong strings, for example I would strum the D chord upwards but hit the 5th and 6th string. Is this normal for beginners? Am I doing anything Wrong? or should I just keep practicing until I get it perfectly? My book does not even mention the problem, let alone give suggestions. I will be grateful for any reply.

The book is Guitar for Dummies by the way.
