How much wattage does a guitar amp need to hear it over (loud) drums w/o mics?

I play punk rock (think 90s), so yeah the drummer pretty much is playing flat out all the time.

I wonder if 50 would be enough, or if I should go a little more just to be safe.
I hear that tube amps go louder than solid state.

I love how people just throw numbers out without regard to physics, acoustics, or money.

First, you didn't say what kind of music you play, and that kind of make a difference. If you're a pop or folk band, you won't need near as much power than if you were a death-speed-thrash-industrial-puke-crud-spit metal band.

Wattage only tells part of the story. The biggest determining factory in "how loud is an amp" is the efficiency of the speakers. Without getting too technical here, very small difference in the efficiency can equate to doubling the power of the amp.

I've jammed with 40 watt amps that I could pin the drummer against the wall with. I've also plugged into 100 watt amps that could not be heard not matter what I did.

A good 100 watt tube type guitar rig is very loud. Unless you're playing 1500 seat rooms, they're useless.

Get yourself a good tube amp, and 50 watts should be plenty (as long as the drummer has a clue and doesn't just play flat out all the time with no dynamics). A 150 watt head makes no sense.

If you play a concert on a large stage, outdoor festival arena, or large room, you'll probably face having to run your guitar amplifier sound system.

The purpose of this course is that your guitar will be heard in a situation where the amp is not enough.

Place the microphone to grill cloth in an "off set" position to the President on board instead of directly in the middle of the plant. This will give the "real" sound of the amplifier via the MIC.

When you do a good control, turn the amp at normal volume while the sound engineer can adjust the level of guitar and mix properly with the rest of the band.

In Conclusion

Although there are times when you use the "line out" feature in the amp is the only option - as when a microphone is simply not available - Choice of sound engineers and sounding guitar of all players in a situation requiring an amplifier to be implemented by the PA system is to put a microphone on it!
